Whale sharks are neither a whale or a shark but are the world’s largest fish that feeds on zooplankton, the smallest animal in the oceans. Whale sharks can grow up to a staggering 40 feet (12 meters) in length.
To optimize growth and food they migrate. The whale shark also has a unique pattern of spots and stripes, sort of like fingerprints that help scientists keep track of their movements as they migrate through tropical waters, and can be found in the Atlantic and Pacific including the coasts of South Africa, Western Australia, Thailand, and Mexico.
Listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List, their populations are currently decreasing.
